In Transit

Water tanks and fire escapes
And people going place to place
Many times I’ve seen this view
Beneath the open blue
The shadows on the alleyway
Of this endless city maze
Starting to see where I have been
And where I could fit in
It’s just a transit — It’s not the end
But the way the sunlight came and fell onto my head
It’s just a transit — It’s not the end
But there’s a feeling I admit — I’ll end up here again
Blaring cabs and empty hands
Did I lose the things I thought I had?
Hard to know if I belong
In the people passing on
But the puddle I peeked in today
I saw less worry on that face
Going near or going far
This feeling will soon depart
It’s just a transit — It’s not the end
But the way the sunlight came and fell onto my head
It’s just a transit — It’s not the end
But there’s a feeling I admit — I’ll end up here again

Feels like it’s been a little while
Still awake on the roof
It’s just me in my now pajama shirt
And the cooing of the pigeons by the curb
Wondering who we were
No insomnia’s not my style
I just couldn’t fall asleep
I’ve slipped that blanket right above my face
But that dusty pink warmed up into day
And another night of thought — piled away
Thoughts I can’t quite say out loud
Maybe here I’ll try it out
Too many thoughts for my — too little place
So it’s back to the roof
Not that I like being alone
But in a blink of eye
It’ll be another nine months and a half
Never wanting, just wanting to have
As we let each other hush, and morning pass
Thoughts I can’t quite say out loud
Like maybe we’re not working out
Too many thoughts for my — too little place
So it’s back on the roof
If I’d let, my thoughts spill into day
If I’d said, “all I wanted was for you —
To be close to me”
Even if quietly
Like we’re the only one awake in the world
Thoughts I can’t quite say out loud
Wish I’d tried it out
Too many thoughts for my — too little place
So it’s back to the roof
This warm, bitter hue
Back to the roof — back to thinking about you
